DIY Sidewalk Chalk Paint

DIY sidewalk chalk paint is an outdoor art activity for all ages! Find out how to make it here!

Sidewalk chalk will forever be an outside must-have for my kids from the first sign of spring until the driveway is covered in snow! Every spring starts with one of those giant, million-count boxes of crisp and clean new chalk. They always gravitate towards our colorful bucket of sidewalk chalk whenever we are spending time outside and I end up refilling it many times throughout the summer! Here’s a little mom hack for you: toss the little leftover pieces into a tray and save them to give one of our favorite activities a try – DIY sidewalk chalk paint!

For this simple DIY chalk paint recipe you will need cornstarch, warm water, a grater, and chalk.

  1. Separate chalk into like-colors and grate each color into a powder.
  2. Put each color into its own small container (a muffin tin or mini mason jars work great!).
  3. In a new bowl, mix 1 cup cornstarch and 2 cups water; if it’s too thick, add more water, if it’s too runny add more cornstarch.
  4. Pour some of the mixed liquid into each color of powder until it reaches a thick paint consistency.
Make this simple sidewalk chalk paint with broken and leftover pieces of chalk. Fun outdoor sidewalk chalk art activity for kids and toddlers!

The colors were so bold and they kids were able to easily paint our driveway. It gets more of a chalky finish as it dries.

We free painted this time but have also played learning games like letter and word writing practice.

Make your own sidewalk chalk paint. A fun art and sensory activity for kids!

Even my 1 year old loved this full-body sidewalk chalk art experience 😆She loved seeing the colors splatter across the driveway. The best part was that it washed off everything (including her) with a little spray from the hose.

This homemade sidewalk chalk paint is a favorite for all ages!
