Sidewalk chalk will forever be an outside must-have for my kids from the first sign of spring until the driveway is covered in snow! Every spring starts with one of those giant, million-count boxes of crisp and clean new chalk. They always gravitate towards our colorful bucket of sidewalk chalk whenever we are spending time outside and I end up refilling it many times throughout the summer! Here’s a little mom hack for you: toss the little leftover pieces into a tray and save them to give one of our favorite activities a try – DIY sidewalk chalk paint!

For this simple DIY chalk paint recipe you will need cornstarch, warm water, a grater, and chalk.
- Separate chalk into like-colors and grate each color into a powder.
- Put each color into its own small container (a muffin tin or mini mason jars work great!).
- In a new bowl, mix 1 cup cornstarch and 2 cups water; if it’s too thick, add more water, if it’s too runny add more cornstarch.
- Pour some of the mixed liquid into each color of powder until it reaches a thick paint consistency.

The colors were so bold and they kids were able to easily paint our driveway. It gets more of a chalky finish as it dries.
We free painted this time but have also played learning games like letter and word writing practice.

Even my 1 year old loved this full-body sidewalk chalk art experience 😆She loved seeing the colors splatter across the driveway. The best part was that it washed off everything (including her) with a little spray from the hose.
