A homemade bird feeder is an easy activity to make with little nature lovers that they will enjoy far beyond craft time! As the weather starts cooling down in the fall and trees start to lose their leaves, we love taking care of our backyard bird friends. This five minute craft is a resourceful way to reuse cardboard tube to create a DIY bird feeder.
Some seed choices that will attract birds to your homemade bird feeder include sunflower, safflower, thistle, cracked corn, dried fruit, or a combination of all. You can find birdseed at the grocery store, big box stores, or local garden center. Check local bird guides that will specify which seed will work best for bird species in your region.

Paper Roll Bird Feeder
You will need: A toilet paper roll, nut/sun/wow butter, bird seed, plate, and spatula or spoon.
- Remove any remaining tp from the paper roll.
- Using a spoon or spatula, spread the nut butter across the outer surface of the paper roll.
- Use fingers or spoon to press bird seed onto the nut butter. Hold the roll over a plate to catch any birdseed that falls.
- Optional: Roll the paper tube through the bird seed on the plate.
- Work in small sections until the entire tp roll is covered.
Once it is completely covered in bird seed, the homemade bird feeder can easily slide onto a bare tree branch. Birds and squirrels will visit the garden to eat seed and nut butter from the tube. It can be left in the tree and the paper roll will either decompose on its own or will be taken by wildlife to be used as nesting material. I can’t wait to make these with the kids and watch a variety of birds visiting their easy homemade bird feeder throughout the year!
